F.A.Q.

What is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?

The pelvic floor muscles are important to the body's core. These muscles can develop weakness or pain, leading to conditions such as bowel or bladder leaking, pelvic organ prolapse, or pain with sex. Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy strengthens the muscles, bones, and ligaments of the pelvis to improve symptoms.

What are the symptoms?

Pelvic floor disorders lead to conditions such as:

  • Pain in the hip, buttocks, tailbone, or joints of the pelvis
  • Limited sitting tolerance
  • Changes in urinary frequency, urgency, or leaking
  • Bowel movements that are painful, constipated, or strained
  • Pain with intercourse
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Reduced range of motion in the hips and lower back

What causes pelvic pain?

The pelvic floor may be damaged by direct injury, pregnancy and childbirth, surgery in the vagina or rectum, chronic disease, or lack of exercise leading to:

  • Pelvic joint dysfunction
  • Muscle imbalance in the pelvic region or core muscles
  • Pressure on one or more nerves in the pelvis
  • Weakness in the muscles of the pelvis and pelvic floor

What diagnoses do you treat?

Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy treats a range of diagnoses, including:

  • Pelvic pain and perianal pain
  • Painful bladder/interstitial cystitis
  • Endometriosis
  • Pre/post pregnancy pelvic pain
  • Vulvodynia

  • Cigna
  • HealthChoice
  • Tricare
  • United Healthcare

What to expect at first appointment?

During your first visit, one of our physical therapists (PT) will help you discover the root of pelvic floor dysfunction and how to solve it. This is accomplished using your physical history, a screening of your back and hips, and an optional internal pelvic exam.

After the evaluation, the PT will design your treatment plan for healing pelvic floor dysfunction, including a home exercise program. Your full participation is key to receiving the best results from physical therapy.

Typical treatment requires between four and ten visits and is usually completed within six months.

Do I need a doctor's referral?

You typically do not need a physician's referral to begin treatment.
